The truth is out. Animal agriculture is one of the leading causes of climate change and environmental destruction and yet environmentalists are always so reluctant to talk about it. Some of them may mutter under their breath that the planet would be better off if we didn’t eat meat, but when it comes to actually doing something about it in their personal lives; no chance!
A classic example is climate-campaigner-wannabe Tony Blair, who recently said he recognised the impacts of animal agriculture but stated he would not be going vegetarian. Al Gore also came under much criticism for avoiding this topic in his movie An Inconvenient Truth.
So what’s this all about? No one seems to have a problem advising people to change their light bulbs, swap their cars for public transport, stop flying, recycle, eat organic and local etc, what’s so different about meat? Al Gore recently gave the game away when he was asked why meat consumption doesn’t take more prominence, he said “I myself am a meat eater and perhaps that has something to do with it. None of us are perfect.” Indeed, no one is perfect and we all need to do more, however, there is something very wrong with people of great influence only advocating the action they choose to take rather than what is actually effective.
Considering Al Gore spends much of his time on a plane, it’s no surprise that on the An Inconvenient Truth website ‘fly less’, is the last of eight recommendations under the ‘reduce your impact while you’re on the move’ section, just as ‘eat less meat’ is the last of 23 tips under ‘reduce your impact in the home’. So, never mind the action that’s really needed; just do the stuff that Al Gore can be bothered to do. Gore and all the other environmentalists who implement a similar, selective method of advocacy, had better watch out, we’re on to them.
