The readers of the Independent recently had the opportunity to ask Tony Blair some questions about his new role as climate change campaigner. He makes some interesting points.
“It is true that airline emissions are growing but they are still responsible for four times fewer emissions than deforestation”.
“But aviation still only makes a tiny contribution to climate change”.
“The destruction of tropical rainforests for conversion to farmland – for meat and crops – must be halted, and reversed”.
So, whilst he defends his jetting around the world, he points his finger at deforestation as a leading cause of climate change. We all know that the meat industry is the main driver of deforestation, so it’s great news that Tony is going vegetarian. Oh, hang on a minute, he’s not. And he’s not going to stop flying either. So is he actually making any changes to his own lifestyle to support his mission to stop climate change? Looks to me like he’s just looking for ways to allow people like him to continue to live the lives they want to live, rather than addressing the route cause of climate change - our greed and unsustainable consumption patterns.
